Titsou a 17 ans, il vit seul avec sa mère, gravement malade, dans une banlieue abandonnée aux hommes de main du gitan El Ghaïb. Le jeune garçon n'est pas seulement pauvre et régulièrement humilié, il est aussi bègue. Un jour Demba, le gardien malien de son immeuble, va lui offrir la clef de sa liberté en lui confiant celles du toit de son immeuble. Afin de faire soigner décemment sa mère, Titsou se lance dans un trafic de fleurs qu'il cultive sur le toit-terrasse de sa tour. De là, il surplombe sa cité et peut même apercevoir la mer... Les fleurs ne serviront d'abord qu'à cacher l'odeur du haschich qu'il va régulièrement vendre au port, au nez et à la barbe du gitan, mais Titsou est de plus en plus fasciné par les crocus d'automne, la bruyère et les roses chantilly. La rencontre avec Moustache, un jardinier au grand coeur, ancien de la légion étrangère et Sophie, une libraire iconoclaste, va lui permettre de dépasser peu à peu son handicap et peut-être même le déterminisme social. De boutures en lectures, l'horizon de Titsou s'élargit, mais El Ghaïb entend bien garder la main. S'engage alors une course contre la montre dont le prix pourrait bien être la vie du garçon... ou sa liberté
