Mhani Alaoui is an award-winning English-language author and anthropologist trained at Princeton University in the United States. She has written three novels, all three published in the United States. Two of these, “Dreams of Maryam Tair” and the most recent, “The House on Butterfly Street”, have received awards in both the United States and Morocco.
The themes explored in her novels include immigration, cities, gender, women's and children's rights, power relations, and the impact of history on everyday life. She was a professor of sociology and anthropology at the Casablanca School of Architecture until the summer of 2021, an experience that profoundly influenced the treatment of the city of Casablanca in her third novel. Mhani Alaoui is a research associate at the Center for African Mediterranean Studies at the University of Arizona.
